History

Shimojima Station opened on 10 May 1922 as a station of the Chikuma Railway, at what is now Hatashimojima, Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture. The operating company was renamed Chikuma Electric Railway on 31 October that year and Matsumoto Electric Railway in 1932, before the station passed to Alpico Kōtsū on 1 April 2011. It is a ground-level station with a single side platform serving one track; there is no station building, but a plastic-roofed shelter stands on the platform, and the station is unstaffed. A level crossing lies just east of the platform, and National Route 158 runs parallel to the north. The Suica IC card is scheduled to become usable there in spring 2027.
