History
Shimowachi Station opened as Wada-mura Station on 8 December 1923, when the Geibi Railway extended its line between Shiomachi Station (now Kamisugi Station) and Bingo-Shōbara Station. It was renamed Shimowachi in February 1925 and was nationalized in June 1933 through the government's purchase of part of the Geibi Railway, becoming a station on the Ministry of Railways' Shōbara Line. Its affiliation changed again when the Shōbara Line was absorbed into the Sanjin Line in October 1936, and that Sanjin Line in turn became part of the Geibi Line in July 1937. Freight handling ended in September 1972, after which the station became unstaffed (with contracted ticket sales), and it passed to JR West at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways in April 1987. Located at Wachi-chō, Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, it now has only a single side platform serving one track, in a halt-style layout.
Notes
It was formerly a three-track layout with an island platform and a side platform for freight, but the former up-line track was also removed, simplifying it to its present halt-style layout.
