History

Shimo-Sugaya Station opened on 16 November 1897 as a station on the privately owned Ōta Railway. The Ōta Railway transferred its operations to the second Mito Railway on 21 October 1901, and that company was nationalised on 1 December 1927, making Shimo-Sugaya a government railway station. Freight handling ended on 20 November 1962, and parcel handling ended on 1 June 1983, when CTC working on the Suigun Line left the station without resident staff and it passed to a simplified commission arrangement with the local municipality, under which staffed ticket sales continued until the commission was released on 1 April 2010. The station joined JR East at the 1 April 1987 privatisation. A simplified ticket vending machine was installed in August 2010 and has since been replaced by a boarding certificate machine.
