History

Shimokawai Station opened on 11 November 1934 as a general (passenger and freight) stop on the Sanshin Railway, on the extension from Sanshin-Miwa (now Tōei) to Sakuma (now Chūbu-Tenryū). The line was nationalised on 1 August 1943 and merged with several other local railways to form the Iida Line. All freight and parcel services were discontinued on 1 December 1971, and the station became unstaffed at the same time. With the 1 April 1987 privatisation of Japanese National Railways, the station passed to JR Central. The original island platform was rebuilt as a single side platform in 2008, and a small waiting room stands on the platform.

Notes

In fiscal 2024 the station served an average of just five boarding passengers per day, down from 73 in fiscal 1993.
