History

Shimo-Kamoo Station was established on 1 February 1916 as "Akasaka Station" (freight-only) on the Chikuhō Main Line's freight branch between Kamimio and Urushio, at what is now Kamō, Kama, Fukuoka Prefecture. It began passenger service on 10 May 1920 as a station on the Urushio Line, and became a connecting point with the Kyushu Sangyō Railway on 15 July 1926. It was incorporated into the Gotōji Line following the wartime nationalization of the Sangyō Cement Railway on 1 July 1943, and was renamed "Shimo-Kamoo Station" on 20 December 1956 to distinguish it from the neighboring Kamoo Station on the Urushio Line. Freight handling was discontinued and the station placed under contracted management on 5 March 1974, it became unstaffed on 1 February 1984, and after the Urushio Line was abolished on 1 April 1986, JR Kyushu took over the station at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987.

Notes

It is the only station on the Gotōji Line with passing capability, and because the switches on both the Shin-Iizuka side and the Tagawa-Gotōji side are normally set to diverge to the right, trains here pass each other running on the right — the reverse of the usual practice — a rare operating arrangement even nationwide.
