History

Shimamatsu Station opened on 21 August 1926 as a general station of the Sapporo Line of the (second) Hokkaido Railway company. Its establishment came after nearby residents petitioned for it, donating land and money. It was nationalized in the wartime purchase of 1 August 1943 and became a station of the Railway Ministry's (national railway's) Chitose Line; the line was double-tracked in 1966, and the 1 April 1987 privatization and division of Japanese National Railways made it a station of both JR Hokkaido and JR Freight. Automatic ticket gates began operating in December 1998, and the "Kitaca" IC card came into use on 25 October 2008. On 18 June 2021 the track 4 platform was abolished, and redevelopment for accessibility improvements has proceeded in a way that reduces the elevator installation required.

Notes

The station was originally built thanks to a local petition in which neighbouring residents donated both land and cash so that Hokkaido Railway would add a stop here.
