History
Shigeyasu Station opened on 15 September 1916 as the terminus of the Mine Light Railway when the line opened from Isa Station (now Minami-Ōmine) to Shigeyasu. The Mine Light Railway was nationalised on 1 June 1920, and the station became an intermediate stop on 30 October 1920 after the line was extended further north to Ofuku. Freight other than traffic using the dedicated siding was discontinued in 1982, parcels in 1984, and the station was made unstaffed in 1986. Following JNR privatisation in 1987, JR West took over operations. Until 2009 the station handled limestone freight from the Taiheiyō Cement Shigeyasu mine loading facility inside the station grounds, worked by dedicated trains to Ubeminato. The line was suspended in July 2023 after heavy rain swelled the Asa River and washed away bridges and roadbed.
Notes
A dedicated daily limestone freight train ran between Shigeyasu and Ubeminato until 18 October 2009, carrying output from the adjacent Taiheiyō Cement mining facility.
