History
Shigeoka Station opened on 26 March 1922 as the southern terminus of the Hōshū Main Line, which the Ministry of Railways had been extending southwards down the east coast of Kyushu from Kokura. The line was pushed on further to meet the Miyazaki Main Line, which had been extending northwards; the two linked up on 15 December 1923, establishing through traffic from Kokura in the north through Shigeoka, and the combined route was renamed the Nippō Main Line. Freight handling ended on 25 February 1972, parcel handling on 1 February 1984, and the station became unstaffed on 10 December 1985. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 control passed to JR Kyushu.
Notes
Daily use has fallen sharply: from the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s the station handled more than 600 boarding and alighting passengers a day, while in fiscal 2015 it averaged just 16 boardings a day. The platform was used as a filming location for the film Nagori Yuki, with the station-building scenes shot at Kami-Usuki Station.
