History
Setoshi Station opened on 31 January 1988 in Seto, Aichi Prefecture, when the third-sector Aichi Loop Railway Company began operating its Okazaki to Kōzōji line. The station had earlier been planned as a stop on the Japanese National Railways Okata and Seto lines, laid out with two island platforms and four tracks where an extension towards Tajimi was to branch off. That roughly 20-kilometre Tajimi section was never begun: in June 1979 the Ministry of Transport froze its construction on the grounds that it would certainly run at a loss, and the plan effectively collapsed in October 1985. Separately, JNR refused in July 1984 to take over the line once opened, so the Okazaki to Kōzōji route passed instead to the third-sector Aichi Loop Railway. The station opened as a single-platform, single-track stop; the present two side platforms date from the doubling of the Setoshi to Kōzōji section on 3 October 2004. Automated turnstiles followed on 24 September 2008 and TOICA was introduced on 2 March 2019.
Notes
The Kōzōji-bound platform still carries the V-shaped canopy left over from the planned 20-kilometre extension to Tajimi, and land and preparatory works for the junction survive at the Kōzōji end of the station, along with the remains of a bridge on its south side.
