History
Setoishi Station opened as a Kagoshima Main Line station under the Imperial Railway Agency (Tetsudoin) on 25 June 1910. When the coastal route was completed throughout in 1927 and the Yatsushiro–Kagoshima section was split off, it became a Hisatsu Line station, and it repeatedly suffered flood damage, with torrential rain in 1965 and 1982 washing away the station building and staff quarters. It became unstaffed in 1986, was inherited by JR Kyushu at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways the following year, 1987, and the station building was removed in December of that year. In the July 2020 torrential rains, flooding of the Kuma River completely destroyed the platform and waiting room, devastating the station premises. In March 2025 the JR Hisatsu Line Revival Council, made up of Kumamoto Prefecture and the municipalities along the line, agreed on a reconstruction plan that includes abolishing this station.
Notes
It is a Hisatsu Line station whose building and platform were washed away or collapsed in three separate floods of the Kuma River, in 1965, 1982, and 2020, and for which a formal policy of abolition was decided in 2025.
