History

Sekine Station opened on 15 May 1899 with the through-opening of the Ōu Southern Line between Fukushima and Yonezawa, today operated as part of the Ōu Main Line and branded the Yamagata Line on this section. The station, in the city of Yonezawa in Yamagata Prefecture, was destaffed on 1 December 1984, briefly placed under simplified consignment from August 1985, then returned to unstaffed operation in August 1987 when no successor consignee was found. It joined JR East at the breakup of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. The station has two opposed side platforms connected by a level crossing and is the point at which the line transitions from single to double track.

Notes

Sekine marks where the track configuration changes on the Yamagata Line: the line toward Yonezawa is single track, while the line toward Ōsawa is double track.
