History

Sekigahara Station (CA79) is on JR Central's Tōkaidō Main Line in Sekigahara-chō, Fuwa District, Gifu — the westernmost station in Gifu Prefecture. It opened on 1 May 1883 as a state-railway station when the Nagahama–Sekigahara section was completed. The line was reorganised over the next decades, with a gradient-easing new line via Kashiwabara opened on 15 October 1899 and the old route via Fukaya and Nagaoka closed on 28 December 1899. A separate gradient-easing route for downbound trains only, the Shin-Tarui Line via the now-closed Shin-Tarui Station, opened on 11 October 1944. JR Central took over on 1 April 1987, and the station became unstaffed on 1 February 2024, when a staff-assisted reserved-seat ticket machine entered service and the station came under remote management from Ōgaki. It has two island platforms.

Notes

The station is the gateway to the battlefield of the 1600 Battle of Sekigahara; its only exit is on the south side, and the sites of camps from the battle are scattered through the surrounding town alongside attractions such as the Gifu Sekigahara Battlefield Memorial Museum, the Sekigahara Town History and Folklore Museum and Sekigahara Warland. The first Sawayaka Walking event was held at the station on 6 October 1991, under the course name 'Sekigahara Ancient Battlefield Tour'.
