History
Sawada Station opened on 7 October 1939 with the Ishinomaki Line's extension from Ishinomaki to Onagawa. At opening it was a staffed station where trains could pass one another and it handled parcels and less-than-carload freight; that handling ended and the station became unstaffed in 1962. The station passed to JR East at the 1987 privatisation of Japanese National Railways. Service was suspended by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, and ground subsidence at the site left the tracks submerged at high tide. The station reopened on 16 March 2013 when the Watanoha–Urashuku section was restored, and from 6 August 2016 some Senseki-Tōhoku Line trains began running through and calling here. The station is a single-platform halt with no station building.
