History

Sanze Station was established on 22 May 1922 as a station on the Japanese National Railways Rikuu West Line, to coincide with the opening of the section between Uzen-Ōyama and this station. It became a station on the Uetsu Line in 1924 and on the Uetsu Main Line in 1925 when the branch line (Akatani Line) opened. Freight and parcel handling ended in 1972, at which point it became unstaffed, and it became fully unstaffed on 14 March 1985. It became a station of the East Japan Railway Company (JR East) at the privatisation of the national railway on 1 April 1987. The current station building was completed in November 1981, and since 2012 an honorary stationmaster drawn from JR East retirees has been appointed for beautification activities. The station platform was damaged in the Yamagata offshore earthquake of 18 June 2019.

Notes

During the large-scale fire of 18 November 1942, special trains carrying personnel and supplies were operated from Atsumi and Tsuruoka stations to the vicinity of Sanze Station.
