History
Sanyo-Temma Station opened on 27 April 1941 as Dentetsu-Tenma Station, the terminus of an extension of the Sanyo Railway Aboshi Line from Hirohata, in what is now Ōtsu-ku of Himeji, Hyōgo Prefecture. The line was further extended to Dentetsu-Aboshi (now Sanyo-Aboshi) on 6 July of the same year, making the station an intermediate stop. The station building was rebuilt on 5 May 1972. It was renamed Sanyo-Temma Station on 7 April 1991. Today it is an unstaffed two-platform station designated SY 54, at 5.6 kilometres from the Aboshi Line’s eastern terminus at Shikama. Because the Aboshi Line is single-track, midday Aboshi-bound (down) trains wait at the station to cross opposing services.
Notes
Shinmei Shrine, the origin of the station's name, is jointly dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, and the "Chikaraishi no Chikaramochi" (strength-stone lifting) event held on its grounds is designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Himeji City.
