History
Sanroku Station is the lower station of the Sarakura Tozan Railway's Hobashira Cable Line (the Mount Sarakura Cablecar), located in Yahatahigashi-ku, Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture. It opened as 'Ogura Kōen Station' on 12 November 1957, simultaneously with the opening of the 1.1-km line between Ogura Kōen and Hobashirayama. It was renamed Sanroku Station on 13 April 1985. Operation was suspended for equipment renewal on 9 October 2000, ending service of the original Hitachi-built cars No. 1 'Hobashira' and No. 2 'Sarakura' that had run since the line opened; service resumed on 30 June 2001 with the introduction of two new Swiss CWA-built cars (yellow 'Haruka' and blue 'Kanata'). Since 1 April 2015 the nickname 'Mount Sarakura Cablecar' has been used in passenger information.
Notes
The line between Sanroku Station and Sanjō Station, the upper station, is a funicular 1.1 km long, with a gauge of 1,067 mm, an elevation difference of about 440 m, a maximum gradient of 528‰, and a journey time of about six minutes. With the introduction of new cars in 2001, it became capable of running at 18 km/h (5.0 m/s), then the fastest such speed in Japan. Because the new cars draw power for lighting and other systems from onboard batteries, the overhead wire and its poles were removed, improving the view.
