Location

History

Sanjō Station is on the Sarakura Mountain Railway's Hobashira Cable Line (the Mount Sarakura Cable Car) in Yahatahigashi Ward, Kitakyūshū, Fukuoka Prefecture. It is the line's upper station, situated on the slope of Mount Sarakura, the highest peak of the Hobashira mountain range. It opened on 12 November 1957 as Hobashirayama Station, together with the opening of the 1.1-kilometer line between Ogura-kōen (now Sanroku Station) and Hobashirayama. It was renamed Sanjō Station on 13 April 1985. Operations were suspended on 9 October 2000 for equipment renewal and resumed on 30 June 2001 with the introduction of two new cars built by the Swiss company CWA. Since 1 April 2015, the line has been marketed to passengers under the nickname "Mount Sarakura Cable Car." From this station, the Mount Sarakura Slope Car (known as the Hobashira Skyline Lift until 31 August 2006) connects further toward the summit.

Notes

Sanjō Station stands on the slope of Mount Sarakura, the highest peak of the Hobashira mountain range, and from the station the Mount Sarakura Slope Car (the Hobashira Skyline Lift until 31 August 2006) connects toward the summit. During night operation, the cable line dims the cabin lighting to enhance viewing of the night scenery, an effect especially striking in the newer cars "Haruka" and "Kanata," which have sunroof ceilings.
