Location

History

Samegai Station (CA 82) is on JR Central's Tōkaidō Main Line in Samegai, Maibara, Shiga — the westernmost JR Central-operated station on the Tōkaidō, the company boundary station of Maibara falling within JR West's jurisdiction. It opened on 21 February 1900 as a general station between Nagaoka (today Ōmi-Nagaoka) and Maibara on the Imperial Government Railways' Tōkaidō Line (renamed Tōkaidō Main Line in 1909). Freight handling ended on 1 March 1972, luggage on 1 February 1984. JR Central took over at privatisation on 1 April 1987. TOICA service started for the Ōgaki side on 2 March 2019 and for the Maibara side on 13 March 2021. The station has one side platform and one island platform; the side platform is fenced off, its track serving mainly as a refuge siding for freight trains. Oversized transformer shipments occasionally arrive at the station, and because Samegai is not a formal freight station they are booked as Gifu Freight Terminal-bound.

Notes

Samegai sits on the old Nakasendō post road, and the area around the station still keeps a feel of the former post town: the Samegai-juku Museum and the Samegai Woodcarving Art Museum are within easy walking distance, alongside the Samegai Trout Farm.
