History

Saku-Uminokuchi Station is a station of the East Japan Railway Company (JR East) Kōmi Line, located at Uminokuchi, Minamimaki, Minamisaku District, Nagano Prefecture. It opened on 27 December 1932 as a general-service station when the Railway Ministry's Kōmi Line (then the Kōmi Kita Line, later the Kōmi Line) was extended from Kōmi Station to this station. At the time of opening it surpassed Fujimi Station on the Chūō Main Line to become the highest-elevation station on the Railway Ministry network. Freight handling ended in 1978 and parcel handling in 1984; the station passed to JR East at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and was unstaffed on 1 April 1991. In December 2012 a new wooden, Japanese-style station building using local Shinshū-grown larch was built. Its elevation is 1,039 meters.

Notes

When it opened in 1932 the station, at 1,039 m, took the record for the highest station on Japan's national railway network from Fujimi on the Chūō Main Line; it remains the seventh-highest station on the JR system.
