History

Saigō Station opened on 10 October 1912 as a stop on what is today the Shimabara Railway Line. Station operations were outsourced on 1 August 1966 and freight handling was discontinued on 31 March 1968. The outsourcing arrangement ended on 1 April 2000, at which point the station was destaffed. The station has two staggered side platforms serving two tracks, with the south platform offset slightly toward Kōjiro-machi and the north toward Taishō; the two are connected by an in-station level crossing without barriers or alarms.

Notes

Saigō Station lies in the Mizuho district of the city of Unzen, Nagasaki Prefecture; its address, Mizuho-chō, Unzen-shi, preserves the name of the former Mizuho Town, and the Unzen City Mizuho General Branch Office — formerly Mizuho Town Hall — stands near the station.
