History

Rubeshibe Station opened on 18 November 1912 as the provisional terminus when the Railway Board's Yūbetsu Light Railway Line opened with a 1,067 mm gauge between Notsukeushi Station (present-day Kitami Station) and this station. It became a through station when the line was extended to Shimo-Ikutawara Station in October 1914, the track beyond this station was regauged in 1916, and the line was incorporated into the Sekihoku Line on 1 October 1922. The Onneyu Forest Railway opened in 1921 and grew to as much as 72.9 km at its greatest extent before being abolished in 1960. Freight handling ended in 1984 and parcel handling in 1985; JR Hokkaido took over the station at the 1987 privatization and division of Japanese National Railways. The staffed ticket counter (Midori no Madoguchi) closed on 30 April 2016, and from 1 May of that year ticket sales have been handled under simplified consignment by Sakaguchi Gofukuten, a drapery shop 200 m north of the station, once a week by advance reservation.

Notes

When Rumoi Station in Rumoi, Hokkaido, closed on 1 April 2023, Rubeshibe Station became the only railway station in Japan whose name begins with the syllable "ru."
