Location

History

Rokuchō Station opened on 24 August 2005 — the same day the Tsukuba Express (Akihabara–Tsukuba) was inaugurated, when Aoi and Rokuchō stations both opened on the new line — in the Rokuchō 4-chōme district of Adachi, Tokyo. Adachi is a special ward in the north-east of Tokyo's ward area and the northernmost of the 23 wards, divided between the Senju district in the south, wedged between the Sumida and Arakawa rivers, and the much larger area north of the Arakawa, the two having been separated when the Arakawa floodway was built in the Taishō period. The ward name derives from the historic Musashi-no-kuni Adachi District established after the Taika Reforms of 645, which extended from present-day Adachi into northern Saitama, and the Senju area south of the Arakawa was the Senju-juku post town on the Nikkō and Ōshū highways in the Edo period, at the northern edge of Edo.

Notes

In Adachi, the Senju-juku area was home to the Senju Vegetable Market, counted as one of the "three great markets of Edo". Rokuchō Station — newly opened with the 2005 Tsukuba Express — sits well north of historic Senju, in an area where ongoing redevelopment has driven a steady rise in passenger numbers.
