History
Rikuzen-Yamashita Station is a station on the East Japan Railway Company (JR East) Senseki Line in Nishikichō, Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture. It opened on 1 February 1939 as the Miyagi Electric Railway's "Miyaden-Yamashita Station," and was renamed "Rikuzen-Yamashita Station" when the company was nationalized on 1 May 1944. It passed to JR East at the privatisation of the national railway on 1 April 1987, and Suica became usable there from 26 October 2003. The old station building was flooded and the entire line was suspended by the Great East Japan Earthquake of 11 March 2011, but service resumed between Yamoto and Ishinomaki on 16 July, and a new station building came into use on 3 March 2012. Its operation was contracted out on 1 October 2013, and it has been a stop for Senseki-Tōhoku Line rapid trains since 30 May 2015.
Notes
A freight branch line diverges from the west side of the station to Ishinomaki-kō Station (within the Nippon Paper Industries plant), and a zero-kilometre post is set up within the station premises. Immediately after the tsunami waters receded, the station was used by the Self-Defense Forces as a water-supply point for residents.
