History

Kenchō-mae Station opened on 10 August 2003 (Heisei 15) with the inauguration of the Okinawa Urban Monorail (Yui Rail) between Naha Airport and Shuri stations. The OKICA contactless IC card went into service here on 20 October 2014 (Heisei 26), Suica became usable on 10 March 2020 (Reiwa 2), and on 28 March 2023 (Reiwa 5) the automatic ticket gates were expanded from three to four lanes. The provisional name during planning was Onaribashi. The station carries station number 7 and serves as the closest stop to both the Okinawa Prefectural Government and Naha City Hall.

Notes

The chime played inside trains as they pull into this station is an arrangement of the Okinawan folk song "Tinsagunu Hana." The photograph on the one-day passes issued when the monorail opened was taken near the station, although the rooftop sign of the Bank of Okinawa and the "Kokuba-gumi" and "Japan Airlines" lettering and logos on the rooftop sign of the Kokuba Building were erased from it; the design later gave way to Yui Rail image illustrations and now follows the layout of an ordinary QR-code ticket. The Kenchō-Kita-guchi intersection about 80 m south of the station leads east into Kokusai-dōri.
