History

Owari Asahi Station opened on 2 April 1905 as Arai Station on the privately operated Seto Electric Railway. It was renamed Asahi-Arai Station on 1 April 1922, and was absorbed into the Meitetsu group on 1 September 1939. Following the creation of Owariasahi City in 1970, the station was renamed to its present name on 1 November 1971. On 3 July 1994 the station moved roughly 100 metres east to its current site and was rebuilt as a ground-level station with an overhead bridge-type station building, with a turnback siding added at the same time. It was promoted to an express stop in 1995, Manaca IC ticketing began on 11 February 2011, and the adjacent Owari-Asahi Rail Yard opened on 30 June 2007 to replace the ageing Kitayama depot.

Notes

Although the station carries the city's name, neighbouring Sangō Station to the east handles more passengers each day. Immediately west of the station lies the Seto Line's only depot, the Owari-Asahi inspection depot, which entered service in 2007 in place of the ageing Kitayama depot.
