History

Otsuru Station, in Hita, Oita Prefecture, opened on 22 August 1937 as an intermediate station on a line that Japanese Government Railways opened the same day. On 1 April 1960 the track was linked with tracks further north and became part of the Hitahikosan Line; the station stands 62.9 km from the line's start. JR Kyushu took over the unstaffed station at the 1 April 1987 privatisation of Japanese National Railways, the successor to JGR. In July 2017 torrential rain covered the line's tracks with mud and debris on the section running to Yoake, and services through Otsuru were cancelled. The present building is a new structure in traditional Japanese style and serves only as a waiting room.
