Location

History

Otoshibe Station opened on 5 August 1911 as a general-service station on the state railway's Hakodate Main Line. No station was established here when Hokkaido Railway opened through the area in 1903, but one came about after residents petitioned following the rotational felling of the imperial forest and the settlement of the land in 1907. On 20 July 1945, as part of wartime capacity expansion, the line was double-tracked by shifting only the up line onto a new alignment; double-tracking south of this station was completed on 10 December 1958, while the section north of the station reverted to single track. The section between this station and Nodaoi Station was double-tracked again on 21 September 1968. Freight handling ended in 1980 and parcel handling in 1984, and the station passed to JR Hokkaido at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987.

Notes

Local residents originally opposed the 1903 line's having a stop here, fearing that travellers would bypass the inn-and-restaurant village; only the 1907 opening of imperial-forest logging finally produced enough demand for the station.
