History

Otobaru Station is the upper of the two stations on the Beppu Rakutenchi Cable Line, a 0.3 km funicular serving the Beppu Rakutenchi amusement park on Mount Tateishi in Beppu, Ōita. Service between the station at the foot of the slope and Otobaru began on 21 September 1929. Wartime priorities halted the line in 1944 and its rails were taken up so the iron could be surrendered; cars ran again from 16 June 1950. Refurbishment closed it between 25 November 2003 and 21 March 2004, and it shut with the park after 30 November 2008, both reopening on 18 July 2009. Riders must pay the amusement park's admission, except residents of the Otobaru settlement above.
