History
The predecessor of Oshima-Sawara Station was Sawara Station, which opened on 25 December 1927 when Oshima Coastal Railway's section between Higashi-Mori Temporary Station and Sawara was completed, at a location different from today's. When Oshima Coastal Railway was nationalized on 25 January 1945, it became a station on the state railway's Hakodate Main Line and reopened as a general-service station, Oshima-Sawara Station, at its present site on the new alignment. It passed to Japanese National Railways in 1949. Freight handling ended on 1 January 1961 and parcel handling on 1 February 1984. The station was unstaffed on 1 November 1984, and passed to JR Hokkaido at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. A wooden station building of the same design as Shikabe Station survives, well preserving its original appearance from construction.
Notes
The "Oshima" prefix was added in 1945 to distinguish the station from Sawara Station on the Narita Line in Chiba.
