History

Oshima-Numajiri Station was established as Oshima-Numajiri Signal Station on 1 June 1945, when the state railway's Hakodate Main Line (Sawara Line) section between Ōnuma Station and Oshima-Sawara Station was completed. It also handled passengers as a bureau-designated provisional stopping place. It passed to Japanese National Railways in 1949. It passed to JR Hokkaido at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and was simultaneously upgraded to a station, becoming Oshima-Numajiri Station. Its operating-kilometre distance was set on 10 March 1990, and a rebuilding involving the partial removal of the station building took place on 24 December 1991. Demolition (complete removal) of the station building began on 30 November 2021. Located at the foot of Mount Komagatake, the station is surrounded by forest and farmland, with only three houses nearby.

Notes

The 1945 name was chosen because two other "Numajiri" stations already existed — Kushiro Rinkō Railway's and the Nihon-Iō Numajiri Tetsudō's — so the old province-name Oshima was prefixed to disambiguate.
