History
Osaka-Umeda Station opened on 21 December 1906 as Umeda Station, extending Hanshin's line from its earlier terminus at Deiribashi Station, in present-day Kita Ward, Ōsaka. The station was moved and placed underground on 21 March 1939. When the Hanshin Namba Line opened on 20 March 2009, holders of commuter passes routed over its new section were allowed to board and alight at this station as well. The station name was changed from Umeda to Osaka-Umeda on 1 October 2019 to make its role as Osaka's main Hanshin terminus clearer to Japanese and foreign visitors. A nine-year renovation, begun on 3 March 2015, widened the boarding platforms, installed platform screen doors on all four tracks, and added new escalators and elevators serving the boarding platforms; the works were completed on 16 March 2024.
Notes
Near the south exit outside the ticket gates, a juice stand named Umeda Mixed Juice, established in November 1969, sells about 1,500 cups of its signature drink each day and is widely regarded as a station landmark.
