History
Ōnoura Station was established on 13 July 1917 as Ōnoura signal station by the Railway Agency (Tetsudōin), on the Sanyō Main Line between Miyajima Station (now Miyajimaguchi Station) and Kuba Station. It was upgraded to a full station and opened as Ōnoura Station on 16 March 1919. Freight handling was discontinued in 1974 and baggage handling in 1985, and the station passed to JR West at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. A Midori no Madoguchi ticket office opened on 10 March 1990, and ICOCA became usable there on 1 September 2007. An overhead (bridge-type) station building entered provisional use on 26 November 2016, and the station improvement works were completed on 14 April 2018. The Midori no Madoguchi ticket office ceased operating on 30 April 2024, and from the following day, 1 May, permanently assigned staff were withdrawn in favour of intercom assistance. It is located in Shioya 1-chōme, Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, station number JR-R12, and it also serves as the gateway station for Miyahama Onsen.
