History
Ōnoshimo Station opened on 28 November 1928 as a Ministry of Railways station. On 12 August 1945 it was strafed by a US military aircraft approaching from the direction of Arao, and a ricocheting bullet killed a schoolgirl inside the station building. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1961, the station was placed under contracted operation on 20 February 1971, and it became unstaffed on 14 March 1985. JR Kyushu took over the station at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. Use of a new station building began on 15 March 2010, and operation was changed to simplified consignment on 1 April. A simplified SUGOCA card reader was installed on 1 December 2012.
Notes
The current station building, rebuilt in 2010, preserves and permanently displays, along with an explanatory panel, a ceiling board from the old station building that was pierced by strafing fire during the Pacific War.
