History

Ōmi Station opened on 15 October 1912 as the terminus of an extension of the Japanese Government Railways' Hokuriku Main Line from Tomari, becoming a through-station on 1 April 1913 when the line reached Itoigawa. The current elevated station building, rebuilt in 1968, faces a north entrance, with passageways to a south entrance and the two island platforms. The 1987 privatization of Japan National Railways made it a joint JR West and JR Freight station; on 14 March 2015, when the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension to Kanazawa opened, it passed to Echigo Tokimeki Railway. Located in Itoigawa, Niigata, the station has been unstaffed since 30 March 2019; regular freight train service ended in March 2008, replaced by truck haulage via Ōmi Off-Rail Station.

Notes

In 2024, an accomplice in a phone scam who tried to arrange a taxi could not correctly tell the taxi company this station's name, and the slip became a clue that led to an arrest.
