History
Okunakayama-Kōgen Station opened on 1 September 1891 as Nakayama Station of the private Nippon Railway. Nippon Railway was nationalised in November 1906, making the station part of the government's Tōhoku Main Line. It was renamed Okunakayama on 11 September 1915 to avoid confusion with Nakayama Station on the Yokohama Line; the name was properly to have been Mutsu-Nakayama. The station building was rebuilt in 1940, and an imperial train carrying Emperor Shōwa stopped here on 10 August 1947 during his post-war tour, from where he went on to inspect the Okunakayama pioneer farm. Freight handling ended on 15 August 1971 and parcel handling on 1 February 1984, and the station was made unstaffed on 14 March 1985, with ticket sales continuing under staff dispatched from its managing station. JR East inherited the station in 1987. With the Tōhoku Shinkansen extension to Hachinohe on 1 December 2002 the station was transferred to the IGR Iwate Galaxy Railway and gained its current name.
Notes
A Yorkshire Terrier named "Maron" served as the station's honorary stationmaster from June 2008 until his death from bronchitis in August 2009, accompanied to work by his keeper, a commissioned station agent.
