History
Okudōkai Station opened on 6 November 1953 as a temporary halt set up by Japanese National Railways on the Chikuhō Main Line to carry spectators to the first All-Japan Motorboat Championship Race held at the Wakamatsu Boat Race stadium. It was upgraded to a full station on 1 November 1962, and became a JR Kyushu station at the 1 April 1987 division and privatization of Japanese National Railways. The SUGOCA IC card became usable on 1 March 2009, and on 4 March 2017 it became unstaffed with the simultaneous introduction of the 'ANSWER' smart support station system across ten stations on the Wakamatsu Line. Its station number is JE04, and use still increases on days when the Wakamatsu Boat Race stadium holds races.
Notes
The station originated as a temporary halt opened to carry spectators to the boat race stadium, and it remains busy on race days today as the nearest station to the Wakamatsu Boat Race stadium.
