History
Ōkaidō Station is a stop on the Iyotetsu Jōnan Line (a tramway) in Ōkaidō 3-chōme and Ichibanchō 2-chōme, Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture, with stop number 19. It sits on National Route 11, with an intersection between its two platforms. On 22 August 1895, Matsuyama Station, the terminus of the Dōgo Railway, opened on the site of the present Iyotetsu Kaikan building; a 1900 corporate merger made it a station of the Iyotetsu Dōgo Line, and it was simultaneously renamed Ichibanchō Station. On 1 September 1911, the Matsuyama Electric Tramway opened its own Ichibanchō stop, which became a stop on that company's Jōnan Line following the merger of 1 April 1921. On 2 May 1926, the Dōgo Line section between this station and Dōgo Station was abolished; in 1949 the track between this station and Kenchō-mae Station was relocated and doubled; and in 1967 the stop was renamed Ōkaidō Station.
Notes
Ōkaidō Station is served by tram lines connecting Dōgo-Onsen with Matsuyama City Station and JR Matsuyama Station, as well as by the loop line that circles Matsuyama Castle from two directions; it is also an intermediate stop for the Botchan Train, which runs only on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. To the south of the stop is the arcade of Ōkaidō Shopping Street, one of Matsuyama's leading commercial districts, and to the north a gently rising street called "Ropeway Street," leading to the Matsuyama Castle ropeway station.
