History
Ochiishi Station opened on 10 November 1920 as a general station, timed with the Railway Ministry's Kushiro Main Line (later the Nemuro Main Line) extension between Atsutoko and Nishiwada stations. On 9 March 1949, station lighting was electrified, with electric lamps replacing gas lamps. Freight handling ended in July 1979 and parcel handling in February 1984; the station became unstaffed on 1 November 1986. JR Hokkaido took over the station at the 1 April 1987 privatization and division of Japanese National Railways, and simplified consignment was also abolished on 1 April 1992, leaving the station fully unstaffed. It is now a ground-level station with two opposed platforms serving two tracks plus a siding for track maintenance; only a waiting area remains of the station building, and the platforms are linked by a level crossing on the Nemuro side.
Notes
In April 2020, as part of an initiative to let passengers enjoy local bento boxes on the Hanasaki Line section, JR Hokkaido announced a trial of advance-reservation sales of an octopus-rice bento at this station, for two trains in each direction.
