History

Nukumi Station opened on 19 December 1934 as a station on the Japanese Government Railways' then Ibusuki Line. The route was renamed the Ibusuki Makurazaki Line on 31 October 1963, and the station passed to JR Kyushu on 1 April 1987 with the privatisation of JNR. Freight handling ended on 20 August 1962 and baggage handling on 8 March 1983, when the station was destaffed with the line's switch to centralised traffic control. The above-ground station has a single island platform reached by a level crossing; there is no station building, only a small open-fronted weather shelter, and one remaining siding is used to stable maintenance vehicles. It is the southernmost station within the city limits of Kagoshima.

Notes

Nukumi is the southernmost railway station within the city limits of Kagoshima.
