History
Nozoki Station opened on 21 October 1904 in Mamurogawa, Mogami District, Yamagata Prefecture. Freight handling ended on 1 April 1976 and parcel handling ended on 1 August of the same year, after which the station became unstaffed and placed under simplified consignment. In 1982 it was rebuilt with a station building converted from a shipping container. It passed to JR East at the privatisation of the national railway on 1 April 1987, and on 1 April 2004 the simplified consignment was also discontinued, leaving the station unstaffed. It is a branch-office boundary station, with the section from the Shinjō direction up to this station falling under the Tōhoku Head Office and the section beyond it under the Akita Branch Office; it is a ground-level station with two facing platforms serving two tracks.
Notes
The kanji 及位 are ordinarily read "kyūi" but are read "Nozoki" here, a notoriously difficult station name said to derive from Shugendō ascetic training in the area; the rakugo storyteller Sanyūtei Enka III made the puzzle well known by recounting it, as an anecdote about his own entrance examination, in the makura to "Nakazawa-ke no Hitobito".
