History
Nopporo Station opened as a flag stop on the government-run Horonai Railway on 3 November 1889 and was transferred to the Hokkaido Colliery and Railway Company on 11 December that year. Nationalisation in 1906 made it a state-railway general station, and from November 1930 it was also the terminus of the Yūbari Railway, whose passenger services here were suspended on 1 April 1974 and whose line closed entirely on 1 April 1975. JR Hokkaido inherited the station at the 1987 JNR privatisation. The current elevated station building, designed jointly with Danish State Railways (DSB) under a sister-railway tie-up, opened on 23 October 2011, completing a grade-separation project carried out as part of Ebetsu's programme to remake its city centre around the station.
Notes
The station's north-side forecourt was the first station plaza in Hokkaidō to use ground-source geothermal heat as the energy source for its snow-melting road heating.
