History
Nokanan Station opened on 10 November 1913 as a general station of the Railway Board's Kushiro Main Line (now the Nemuro Main Line); it is located in Nokanan-chō, Ashibetsu City, Hokkaido. A dedicated line to the nearby Takizawa Woodworks (later Takizawa Veneer) was laid around 1937, and the station passed to Japanese National Railways in June 1949 after the war. Freight handling ended in April 1976, and the station became unstaffed at the same time parcel handling ended in May 1982; JR Hokkaido took over the station at the 1 April 1987 privatization and division of Japanese National Railways. On 22 October 1991, track realignment for the construction of the Takisato Dam switched the section between this station and Shimanoshita Station to a new route running through the Takisato and Shimanoshita tunnels, and the intervening Takisato Station was abolished. It is now an unstaffed station with two separate platforms serving two tracks, connected by a level crossing within the station grounds.
Notes
The station name is thought to derive from the Ainu "nokan-nay" ("small river"). The place name itself was once eliminated when a 1939 reorganization of district names replaced it with "Maruyama" and "Kongō," but because the post office and elementary school kept their old names and the change never took hold, it was revived as "Nokanan-chō" in September 1955.
