History

Noheji Station opened on 1 September 1891 as a station of the Nippon Railway. It became a government railway station upon the nationalization of Nippon Railway on 1 July 1906, and became a junction station on 20 March 1921 when the Ōminato Light Railway (today's Ōminato Line) opened. On 5 August 1968 the Nambu Jūkan Railway was extended to connect at this station, but that line suspended operations on 5 May 1997 and was abolished on 1 August 2002. The station became a JR East station at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and with the full opening of the Tōhoku Shinkansen on 4 December 2010, when the Tōhoku Main Line was transferred to the Aoimori Railway, it became a station jointly used with that company (managed by Aoimori Railway).

Notes

The station is home to Japan's first railway snow-protection forest, planted in May 1893, which has been designated Railway Monument No. 14.
