History
Nishiōji Station opened on 16 September 1938 as a passenger and parcel station of the Railway Ministry's Tōkaidō Main Line, between Umekōji Station (now Kyoto Freight Terminal) and Mukōmachi Station, established to coincide with the extension of the Kyoto city tramway's Nishiōji Line. The station building was rebuilt in 1964, and in 1985 the inner-track platform was extended to accommodate 12-car trains so that daytime rapid services could stop there. It passed to JR West at the division and privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987. Automatic ticket gates came into operation in 1997, and ICOCA became usable in 2003. The Midori-no-Madoguchi ticket office closed in March 2022, and on the 20th of that month the north-side station building and an elevator came into service. It is now included within the "JR Kyoto Line" nickname section, with station number JR-A32.
Notes
Although the Tōkaidō Shinkansen passes overhead above the station building and platform 1, the station is classified under the Railway Business Act as a "stop" rather than a full station, because it has no absolute signal.
