History

Nishikata Station opened on 1 July 1922 as a Ministry of Railways station. It was rebuilt with a reinforced-concrete station building on 25 March 1952. Freight handling ended on 1 September 1961, and after baggage handling ended on 14 March 1983 contracted operation also ended and the station became unstaffed; on 30 March 1988 the old station building was demolished and replaced with the current simplified station building. It was inherited by JR Kyushu at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and transferred to the Hisatsu Orange Railway with the opening of the Kyushu Shinkansen on 13 March 2004. From 15 March 2025, Sendai Kankō Kōtsū acquired naming rights, and the station has carried the subtitle "Together with the community, together with daily life, heartfelt service — Sendai Kankō Kōtsū Station."
