History

Nishi-Miyakonojō Station sits 392.4 kilometres from the Nippō Main Line's starting point at Kokura. The platforms are elevated above the concourse, and an empty viaduct that branches south from the station is the unused remnant of the Shibushi Line, which closed in 1987. The station building was renovated in October 2017, its exterior changed to white and black with the station name in gold letters alongside the Miyakonojō Shimazu family crest, and from April 2023 station operations have been outsourced to Miyazaki Kotsu after a JR Kyushu Service Support arrangement ended in March that year. No barrier-free path is available between the concourse and the platforms.

Notes

An elevated bridge branches south from the station without rails; it is the surviving stub of the Shibushi Line, which operated until 1987.
