History

Nishi-Kajima Station opened on 6 December 1909 as "Kajima Station" on the Dai Nippon Kidō company's Hamamatsu branch's Kajima Line. It was renamed Enshū-Futamata Station in 1923, and on 1 March 1938 it was relocated about 400 meters south in connection with the construction of the Japanese National Railways' Futamata Line, taking its present name. It became a junction station with the opening of the Japanese National Railways' Futamata Line in June 1940, and came under the jurisdiction of Enshū Railway in November 1943. It became a jointly-used station with Tenryū Hamanako Railway when the Japanese National Railways' Futamata Line was converted to a third-sector railway on 15 March 1987, and was selected among the "100 Chūbu Region Stations" in 2000. It is the terminus of the Enshū Railway line, with the company's rolling stock depot, "Nishi-Kajima Inspection Yard," located adjacent to it.

Notes

The station name "Kajima" is said to derive from a legend that deer would cross over to a sandbar in the Tenryū River.
