Location

History

Nikenchaya Station opened on 1 December 1928 as a station on the Kurama Electric Railway, in Sakyō-ku, Kyoto. The station's name derives from two teahouses that once stood there serving travelers heading to Kurama. In September 1939 the section from this station to Ichihara Station was reduced to single track as a cost-rationalization measure, and on 1 August 1942 the station became part of the Keifuku Electric Railroad Kurama Line through a corporate merger. In November 1944 the section between Yamabana (now Takaragaike) and this station was also singled to surrender materials for the war effort, but on 1 April 1986 that section was transferred to Eizan Electric Railway, making this a station on the Eizan Electric Railway Kurama Line, and on 28 September 1990 the section between Iwakura Station and this station was double-tracked again. The station is numbered E13 and is unstaffed, with two opposed platforms serving two tracks.

Notes

Of the two teahouses that gave the station its name, one moved to Ichihara in the early Shōwa era and went out of business, and the other closed in 1992; neither of the "two teahouses" remains today.
