History

Niizaki Station opened on 15 April 1956 as a general station when the JNR Hakushin Line was completed end-to-end. Wagon-load freight other than dedicated-line traffic was discontinued on 15 June 1978, and parcel handling ended on 1 February 1984. The station passed to JR East and JR Freight at the 1 April 1987 privatisation. The last freight trains called on 30 September 1995, and an elevated station building entered service on 1 December 1995. Automatic ticket gates began operating on 10 February 2005, and Suica IC service became available on 21 January 2006. The dedicated ticket office (Midori-no-madoguchi) closed on 30 September 2023, and the station is now operated under contract by Niigata Station.
