History
Nii Station opened on 29 August 1901 as the terminus of the Bantan Railway's extension from Ikuno, at Nakagahara, Nii, Asago, Hyōgo Prefecture, handling both passengers and freight. The Bantan Railway was sold to the Sanyō Railway on 1 June 1903, the line was extended onward to Wadayama on 1 April 1906, and the Sanyō Railway was nationalised on 1 December 1906; the line became the Bantan Line under the 12 October 1909 line-name regulation. Wagon-load freight ended on 1 April 1980, parcel handling ended and the station was de-staffed on 4 April 1983, and on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR West at the JNR privatisation. Management of the station moved from Fukusaki to Toyooka on 1 June 2022, and on 1 October 2022 organisational reform placed it under the Fukuchiyama Management Division of JR West's Kinki Regional Headquarters.
Notes
The wooden station building still carries a property plaque inscribed "August Meiji 34" (August 1901), the month the station opened; it began as a simple gable-roofed structure and took its present form in a 1937 renovation. Because Arai Station — written with the same characters 新井 but read "Arai" — belonged to the Shin'etsu Main Line (today the Echigo Tokimeki Railway Myōkō Haneuma Line), tickets issued at this station were then marked "(播) 新井", Bantan Nii, to tell the two apart.
